The Cuban movies “El edén perdido,” “Una rose de Francia,” and “Madrigal” all featured de Armas in supporting roles. She met her future Spanish agent, Juan Lanja, on a promotional trip to Spain for one of the films she was promoting. When de Armas was 18 years old, she uprooted to Madrid, Spain, to further her acting career. After only two weeks in the country, she auditioned for casting director Luis san Narciso, who had seen her in “Una rose de Francia.”

He eventually found a role for her in “El Internado,” a drama for young adults. From 2007 through 2010, De Armas portrayed Carolina on the show for a total of six seasons. The show, which was filmed at a fictional boarding school, shot to fame in Spain. At the same period, in 2009, she had a leading role in the coming-of-age comedy “Mentiras y Gordas.”

Despite the show’s success, de Armas begged to be written out of the series in its second-to-last season out of fear that she was being typecast in predominantly teenage parts. Following this, De Armas spent a few months in New York City studying the English language. She went back to her homeland to star in the historical drama series Hispania, for which she shot seventeen episodes. Her subsequent cinematic roles include Antonio Trashorra’s “El callejón” (2011) and “Anabel” (2015), after her involvement on that series ended in 2011.

When this phase of her career ended, de Armas’s acting career hit something of a lull. She began taking acting classes at a Madrid theatre, and after signing with a Hollywood agent, relocated to the city of angels in 2014. She didn’t know much English and had almost no name recognition in the United States, so De Armas says she had to start her acting career from scratch when she moved to LA. After arriving, she studied English intensively for four months.

In 2015’s “Knock Knock,” she made her Hollywood debut with Keanu Reeves. The next year, in 2016, Reeves offered her a part in the suspense film he was creating called “Exposed.” Often learning her lines phonetically, she also made appearances in “War Dogs” and “Hands of Stone” that same year. In 2017, de Armas scored a supporting part in the critically acclaimed sequel “Blade Runner 2049.” In addition, she made an appearance in the adrenaline-pumping thriller “Overdrive.” The next year, she starred in “Corazón,” a medical drama produced with support from the Montefiore Medical Center to promote organ donation.

In 2019, De Armas got her big break in Hollywood when she played a leading role in the ensemble picture “Knives Out.” She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical and universal acclaim from critics. She was also named Best Supporting Actress at the Saturn Awards. It was a busy year for de Armas in the movies: 2020 saw her in “The Informer,” “The Night Clerk,” “Sergio,” and “Wasp Network.”

She was also cast as Marilyn Monroe in the film “Blonde,” a biopic based on Monroe’s life and adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name.

Personal Life

During the middle of 2010, de Armas started dating the Spanish actor Marc Clotet. In July of 2011, the happy couple tied the knot on the Costa Brava. About two years later, in 2013, they decided to separate. She started dating talent agent Franklin Latt in the beginning of 2015, and they dated until the end of 2016, when they became engaged briefly.

It was on the filming of “Deep Water” in late 2019 that she first met American actor Ben Affleck. Beginning in early 2020 and ending in early 2021, they were a couple.
