Monona Grove Softball Defeated in Badger-east Championship Game!

In the Badger-East Conference Championship game on Friday, May 13, the Silver Eagles lost 9-2 in extra innings to Beaver Dam in a rematch from two weeks ago.

“At the plate, Beaver Dam is a very disciplined team. “They fought off a lot of pitches, so some of their bats deserve credit, too,” said Chris Uschan, a co-coach for Monona Grove.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Harper Mayfield scored when senior Paige Hanson reached on an error.

“She (Hanson) has taken her plate appearances to the next level. Uschan said, “She’s focused on pitch selection and being disciplined about what she wants and doesn’t want.”

Carlee Lapen’s solo home run in the top of the sixth tied the game at 1-1 for Beaver Dam. Beaver Dam scored in the top of the seventh because of a mistake, giving them a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh.

In the seventh inning, with two outs, freshman Cathryn Zegadlo walked to put senior Karlie McKenzie on base.

“We looked at it like every batter at the plate was the tying run. We only thought about getting a base hit, and with (Zegadlo’s) wheels, we can score,” said Uschan.

With one strike left, McKenzie hit a double that scored Zegadlo to tie the game at 2-2 and send it into extra innings.

Beaver Dam hit a two-run single in the top of the eighth and then scored five more runs to take a commanding 9-2 lead. The only hit for MG in the bottom of the inning was a single by senior Harper Mayfield. Beaver Dam won the 2022 conference title with a 9-2 win.
