Big Freedia was born to a Christian family on January 28, 1978, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her father, Freddie Ross Sr., worked as a truck driver, and her mother, Vera Ross, was a hairdresser. Freedia lost her mother in 2014 when she died of cancer.
She grew up with a younger brother, Adam (who passed away in 2018), and a sister, Crystal Ross. Freedia discovered her love of music at a young age and began singing in the choir as she grew older. She even took piano lessons as a child and said, “music has always been a part of my life.”
Freedia used to sing in the choir at Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans. Around the same time, she was offered a position as choir director. At the same time, she discovered her composing and producing abilities.
