Simmons created The Ringer, a website, in February 2016 under his newly formed Bill Simmons Media Group. On June 1, 2016, The Ringer went live for the first time. Over the next few years, the company evolved into a hugely successful podcast network with over 30 episodes including his own “The Bill Simmons Podcast” and “The Rewatchables”.
The Ringer was acquired by Spotify in January 2020 for a figure that has been reported but not confirmed to be between $200 and $300 million. The Ringer had 90 employees at the time of the acquisition, with the majority of them writing daily content for the company’s website. Spotify paid $400 million for podcast network Gimlet Media in 2019, according to the Wall Street Journal. Gimlet had $15 million in revenue in 2018.
