Robert Barisford Brown was born on February 5, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, to substitute teacher Carole Elizabeth and construction worker Herbert James Brown. Brown and his seven siblings grew up in the Roxbury Orchard Park Projects.

When Brown was three years old, one of his boyhood idols, James Brown, performed in Boston, sparking a desire to pursue a career as a vocalist. Brown then joined the church choir, where he discovered and honed his vocal skills.
