One of them was Madut, Bol Bol’s half-brother who eventually went on to play college ball at Southern University.
Bol Bol was named after his great-grandfather Bol Chol Bol, who was believed to be 7 feet 10 inches tall. Although Bol Bol was born in Sudan his family flew to the country when he was just two years old and traveled to America to be considered political refugees.
Manute Bol was loved by the people of Sudan and known for his charitable contributions. Still, the government accused him of being an American Spy back in 1998 during the second Sudanese Civil War.
After moving to America Bol Bol decided to move to his native country and was forced to stay in Egypt for six months in 2001 due to visa problems. After six months in Egypt, some kind friends from America purchased him a plane ticket and his family would eventually get over to the US with the help of a Connecticut senator.
The family finally settled in Connecticut where Bol Bol got encouraged to start playing Basketball by his dad and older half-brothers.
Bol Bol fell in love with basketball after he got a toy basketball net, even though his father took him to the gym and taught him how to shoot hoops. When Bol Bol was seven years old, he and his three younger brothers and three younger sisters moved to Olathe, Kansas, a city with a lot of South Sudanese people.
By the time Bol Bol was 12, he was in the 7th grade. Footage of him at the crossroads of a basketball camp in Indianapolis was posted to YouTube, which got the attention of the sports world. He was featured on CBS Sports and The Washington Post. Bol Bol was in the eighth grade when New Mexico State offered him a scholarship to play in the first division.

After playing in the (AAU) for Kansas City, and GMC at the Jayhawk Invitational under 15 games, Bol Bol garnered interest from colleges in Olathe, Kansas, and Oklahoma.

Bol Bol played for the varsity team as a sophomore, eventually leading them to the Kansas Class 4A Division one championship game against McPherson High School in March 2016. He went on to earn first-team honors in class 4A1 and a scholarship offer from Kansas a month later.
Bol Bol’s high school career would continue beyond Bishop Miege. It was revealed in November 2016 that he would be transferring to Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, for his junior year.
His mother encouraged him to transfer in order for him to play for coach Gary McKnight. Bol Bol made his Mater Dei debut on January 24, 2017, scoring 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and blocking three shots in a win over Orange Lutheran High School. Bol Bol averaged 16.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks as a junior for the club. During the season, he got scholarship offers from Arizona, USC, Oregon, Kentucky, and UCLA.
Bol played in the Niek Elite Youth Basketball league with the California Supreme before committing to a college, averaging 25.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 4.1 blocks per game. However, in November 2017, Bol Bol transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada.
McKnight, his previous coach, stated that it was due to family obligations. Bol Bol, the son of Minute, would be 7 feet 2 inches tall and weighing between 220 and 225 pounds depending on the day by his senior year.
