Trevor Story Has the Breakout Game He Desperately Needed
Keep your eyes closed for the time being. Despite this, the Boston Red Sox have gone 6-3 in their last nine games and have a chance to win a third straight series against the Atlanta Braves after winning the first two against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park. As a result, their $140 million second baseman has played a key role in the team’s comeback victory.
After a terrible start to the 2022 season, Red Sox hitter Trevor Story has picked up his game. With three home runs and seven RBIs in Thursday night’s 12-6 win over Seattle, he’s clearly on a roll. For the Red Sox, Story’s performance was a game-changer on the scoreboard.
Moreover, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, Story stole a base in the game, making him the first second baseman in MLB history to do so in a three-home run game (via ESPN). He had a.194 batting average, a.545 on-base percentage, and zero home runs in his first 24 games with the Red Sox. Since then, he’s hit.333 with a 1.243 OPS, five home runs, and 13 RBIs in his last nine contests, a remarkable turnaround.
“Just kind of settling in,” Story said in an interview with MLB Network. Two things I’ve been working on all season that have helped me feel more at ease and like myself in the box recently. For me, it boils down to this: “I just try to hit the ball hard and not do too much, and big things happen for me, sometimes,”
A four-seam fastball and a changeup were used by Story to hit two of his three home runs. He attributed his recent resurgence to improved timing, particularly his ability to turn faster on fastballs.
This is huge,” Story exclaimed. “We were talking about tenths of a second,” he said. The more time you have to play with, the better off you will be. As of this writing, I’m feeling better and more confident that things are going in the right direction.
At 16-22, the Red Sox are 12 games back of the first-place Yankees in the AL East. Although Story has finally arrived, the lineup is starting to look more and more like itself. What we’ll find out is if they can keep stacking wins, as well as how much of a role Story will play.
