Burt Bacharach was born in 1928 in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in the Queens neighborhood of Kew Gardens. Irma, his mother, was a painter and songwriter, and Mark, his father, was a syndicated newspaper columnist. Bacharach attended Forest Hills High School as a teen. He studied classical piano but was dissatisfied, so he moved on to jazz and bebop. Bacharach received his higher education at McGill University in Montreal, the Mannes School of Music in New York and the Music Academy of the West in Montecito, California.

Bacharach spent three years as a pianist and conductor for singer Vic Damone after returning from his tour of duty in the United States Army. He later worked with Polly Bergen, Steve Lawrence, Paula Stewart, and the Ames Brothers. Bacharach was recommended to Marlene Dietrich, a Hollywood actress in need of a conductor and arranger for her nightclub shows, in 1956. He toured the world with Dietrich until his early 60s.

Bacharach reportedly started his career in the 1950s, but his first breakthrough came in 1957 he met David. They scored back to Bach’s UK No. 1s with two of their earliest songs, The Story of My Life by Marty Robbins and Magic Moments by Perry Como. In his four decades-long careers, Bacharach produced 73 Top 40 hits in the US and 52 in the UK.

In his lifetime, he won six Grammy Awards and three Oscars. Additionally, he received a lifetime achievement Grammy in 2008 for his contribution to the world of music.
