Chrissy Teigen: “To Save My Life” I Decided to Have an Abortion, Not a Miscarriage

It shocked Chrissy Teigen that the miscarriage she thought she suffered two years ago was an abortion.

There were issues throughout the pregnancy, and in September 2020, Teigen and her husband, John Legend, confirmed the loss of their unborn son, whom they had named Jack. Although Teigen never used the term “miscarriage,” that is what the media has been calling it.

Speaking Thursday at social impact consultant Propper Daley’s “Day of Unreasonable Conversation,” Teigen said that it took her “almost a year” to realize that the term “miscarriage” was inaccurate.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, she has spoken about how she was forced to make “many tough and agonizing decisions” during her pregnancy with Jack two years ago. By the time I was about halfway through [my pregnancy], it was abundantly evident that neither he nor I would live without medical assistance.

The Hollywood Reporter highlighted that Teigen cut off the middle of her account of the event.

Put, an abortion, as Teigen put it. An abortion to spare my life for a hopeless fetus. And I have to say; until recently, I had never made the connection.

After the Supreme Court eliminated abortion rights earlier this summer, Teigen says she came to understand the gravity of the situation during a tense chat with Legend. According to Teigen, after the court’s ruling, she told Legend she felt compassion for individuals who had to deal with the psychological stress of deciding to have an abortion. Then Legend revealed that she, too, belonged to this group.

“I fell silent, feeling weird that I hadn’t made sense of it that way,” Teigen shared. “I told the world we had a miscarriage, the world agreed we had a miscarriage, all the headlines said it was a miscarriage. And I became frustrated that I didn’t, in the first place, say what it was, and I felt silly that it had taken me over a year to understand that we had had an abortion.”

The couple married in 2013 and now have two children: Luna, 6, and Miles, 4.

Two years after her last pregnancy, the model and lifestyle tycoon made the happy announcement in August.

Teigen said that she feels “a sense of relief” every time doctors find a heartbeat during prenatal checkups in her Instagram post announcing her pregnancy.

“I don’t think I’ll ever walk out of an appointment with more excitement than nerves,” Teigen said. But up to this point, everything has been lovely and wonderful, and I am filled with optimism and awe.
