Dario Franchitti joined Hogan Racing in 1997 and made his CART Championship Series debut in 1998. In the final race of 1999 at California Speedway, he lost a close friend, Greg Moore, in a fatal crash, and a big crash in preseason testing in 2000 ruined Dario’s season. He only won once, in 2001 at Cleveland, and he dedicated his 2002 Vancouver Molson Indy victory to Greg, who grew up in nearby Maple Ridge, British Columbia.
Franchitti joined the IndyCar series in 2003, but he didn’t find success until 2007. That year, he won the rain-shortened Indianapolis 500, and BBC Scotland named him Sports Personality of the Year. Dario briefly switched to NASCAR, but things didn’t work out, and he quickly returned to IndyCar. He was involved in a serious accident in Houston in 2013 after achieving more success. Franchitti was forced to retire due to his injuries. Dario won 31 races during his career.
