Marcus Morton, better known by his stage name reveal, delivered fiery rap verses over alternative-rap sounds. After a shoe was hurled at him by an overly passionate fan, he responded, “Let me see that shoe,” after the shoe landed in front of him.
“What the hell is that shoe! ” he yelled before throwing it back into the mob of people who were laughing. The artwork for AG Club’s newest album, “Impostor Syndrome,” is printed on a hoodie that band member Jody Fontaine wears. An unforgettable night of rap music was had by all as a result of the hype and intensity generated by Curry and his opening acts, who filled Roadrunner.
Who is Denzel Curry?
On February 16, 1995, in Carol City, Florida, the world welcomed Denzel Rae Don Curry into the world. Both his mom and dad are from the Bahamas, so he has that going for him. Curry’s artistic journey began in elementary school when he wanted to become a poet, and continued until middle school when he started rapping. He spent his time challenging other kids to rap fights at the local Boys & Girls Clubs of America chapter. He spent two years in Miami’s Design and Architecture High School before being sent out.
After that, Curry continued his education at Miami Carol City Senior High School, where he began developing Nostalgic 64 between classes. A child molestation claim was made by Curry in an interview with The Breakfast Club in 2018; the perpetrator was an adult guy who was never identified.
The career of Denzel Curry
Curry’s debut mixtape, King Remembered Underground Tape 1991-1995, was released on September 24, 2011. Inclusion of the entire project that Curry uploaded on Space Ghost Purrp’s page ultimately sparked the beginning of Denzel’s musical career. As a result of the success of his debut mixtape, Curry was invited to join Space Ghost Purrp’s hip-hop crew, Raider Klan.
His second mixtape, King of the Mischievous South Vol. 2, was released in 2012. First gaining recognition in 1996 with the release of his mixtape No. 1 Underground Tape, he quickly attracted the attention of fellow American rapper Earl Sweatshirt and other members of the Odd Future label.
After the murder of Trayvon Martin, who also hailed from Carol City and graduated from the same high school as Denzel Curry, Curry produced his third mixtape, titled Strictly for My R.V.I.D.X.R.Z. His album was named after Tupac Shakur, who influenced his rapping technique. The first teaser for Curry’s upcoming fifth studio album, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, premiered online on January 5, 2022.
Guest performances from T-Pain, 6lack, Slowthai, Rico Nasty, J.I.D., and Thundercat were announced. Curry promised a new, more mature tone for the project, saying, “Y’all are not going to hear the same type of Denzel anymore.” The first taste of that new sound was the January 24 release of a single titled “Walkin,” accompanied by a Western-inspired music video produced by Adrian Villagomez.
And, as Curry put it, the album “is made up of everything that I couldn’t on Ta13oo or Imperial because I was going through depression rage issues,” drawing influence from classic hip-hop, drum and bass, trap, poetry, jazz, and more. The album was released on March 1st, and a tour around North America and Europe to support it (including Kenny Mason, Mike Dimes, Reveal, and PlayThatBoiZay) was announced the very next day. The song “Zatoichi,” which features Slowthai, was released on February 24 as the second single from Curry’s next album.
The accompanying music video was likewise directed by Adrian Villagomez. Curry stated the album’s release date of March 25 on March 18th. The music video for the third song, “Troubles,” featuring T-Pain, premiered on March 21. On March 25, 2022, the album finally hit shelves. It entered the Billboard 200 at position 51 and the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at position 23. One of Curry’s contributions to Apple Music’s Juneteenth 2022: Freedom Songs is a song called “1st Quarter” that features the rapper Reason. Being a Black guy in America, he felt it was a feat to reach the quarter mark of his life.
The biographical film Elvis, starring Michael Shannon as Elvis Presley, aired in June 2022, and the soundtrack CD, featuring Curry’s song “Let It All Hang Out” featuring Play That Boi Zay, was released in the same month. The music video for “Talk About Me,” a collaboration between Dot da Genius, JID, Curry, and Kid Cudi, was directed by Cole Bennett and dropped on the 24th of June, 2022.
Curry gave a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR on June 29th, 2022. He appeared on Jimmy Fallon‘s Tonight Show on July 21 and performed “Walking.” Melt My Eyez See Your Future was released by Curry on September 30, 2022. (The Extended Edition). The Cold Blooded Soul Band, who also appeared on Curry’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert and The Tonight Show, reinterpreted the songs from the original record for this CD.
Denzel Curry’s Personal Life
Treon “Tree” Johnson, Curry’s brother, passed away on February 27, 2014, in Hialeah, Florida, after experiencing difficulties after being tased by police. After receiving a 911 call reporting that Johnson was hitting two dogs with a metal pipe, police arrived on the scene. To subdue Johnson, police used pepper spray, a taser, and physical force.
Even after being taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and died. His loved ones claimed the police showed excessive force in the incident. Curry has addressed Johnson’s death in interviews and songs. Curry was open about his appreciation for the arts; his drawings were inspired by a wide range of comics and anime.
There was a place in Miami known as the ULT House where Curry, XXX Tentacion, Ronny J, and the other members of the C9 collective lived until January 2017. He told Montreality in an interview that after breaking up with his girlfriend, he painted his entire room, and that other resident of the ULT House did the same in support of him. He eventually settled in Los Angeles. Due to a common uncle, Curry learned in January 2021 that he is connected to St. Louis rapper Smino.
