Who is Denzel Curry?

On February 16, 1995, in Carol City, Florida, the world welcomed Denzel Rae Don Curry into the world. Both his mom and dad are from the Bahamas, so he has that going for him. Curry’s artistic journey began in elementary school when he wanted to become a poet, and continued until middle school when he started rapping. He spent his time challenging other kids to rap fights at the local Boys & Girls Clubs of America chapter. He spent two years in Miami’s Design and Architecture High School before being sent out.

After the murder of Trayvon Martin, who also hailed from Carol City and graduated from the same high school as Denzel Curry, Curry produced his third mixtape, titled Strictly for My R.V.I.D.X.R.Z. His album was named after Tupac Shakur, who influenced his rapping technique. The first teaser for Curry’s upcoming fifth studio album, Melt My Eyez See Your Future, premiered online on January 5, 2022.

Guest performances from T-Pain, 6lack, Slowthai, Rico Nasty, J.I.D., and Thundercat were announced. Curry promised a new, more mature tone for the project, saying, “Y’all are not going to hear the same type of Denzel anymore.” The first taste of that new sound was the January 24 release of a single titled “Walkin,” accompanied by a Western-inspired music video produced by Adrian Villagomez.

And, as Curry put it, the album “is made up of everything that I couldn’t on Ta13oo or Imperial because I was going through depression rage issues,” drawing influence from classic hip-hop, drum and bass, trap, poetry, jazz, and more. The album was released on March 1st, and a tour around North America and Europe to support it (including Kenny Mason, Mike Dimes, Reveal, and PlayThatBoiZay) was announced the very next day. The song “Zatoichi,” which features Slowthai, was released on February 24 as the second single from Curry’s next album.
