Early Life of Deontay Wilder

Defending heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder entered the world on October 22, 1985, in Tuscaloosa. After finishing high school in 2004, he enrolled at Tuscaloosa Central. He had always hoped that he would be able to play football and basketball at the University of Alabama while he was in high school. His daughter was born to him and his then-girlfriend Helen Duncan in 2005. The health problems associated with their daughter’s Spina Bifida prevented her from enrolling at The University of Alabama. Therefore, he decided to attend Shelton State Community College so that he could be near his daughter. Deontay was compelled to forego his hopes of playing basketball and football at the collegiate level after this choice was made. For a while, he struggled with severe depression and even considered suicide, as he explained:

“You don’t stop to consider the consequences for your daughter, your children, and so on and so on… You can’t help but focus solely on yourself when you’re in that frame of mind. A lot of suffering, both internal and external, is running through your mind at the moment.”

After pulling himself out of his funk, he decided to devote himself to boxing rather than returning to his previous sports. Remarkably, it wasn’t until he was 20 that he started boxing training. The following year, he dominated the boxing scene, claiming both the National Golden Gloves and the US Championships. When the 2008 Summer Olympics were held in Beijing, he went on to earn a bronze medal. Wilder had a record of about 30–5 as an amateur.

Deontay Wilder’s Career Life

Wilder, at 23 years old, made his professional boxing debut on November 15, 2008, at the Vanderbilt University Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee. He squared up against Ethan Cox (2-2-1), and after knocking Cox down three times in the second round, he scored a technical knockout (TKO) victory. In 2009, Wilder fought seven times and won every fight in the first round. By October 2012, Wilder has won 25 consecutive bouts, all through knockout and all in the first four rounds. Among the notable knockouts were those of former WBA heavyweight title challenger Owen Beck (27-10, 20 KOs), former WBO light heavyweight title challenger DeAndrey Abron (15-6, 10 KOs), and former WBO heavyweight title challenger Damon Reed (27-10, 20 KOs) (46-15, 32 KOs).

On December 15, 2012, at the Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, Wilder won his first professional boxing title by knocking out Kelvin Price, 37, who was undefeated (13-0, 6 KOs). There was supposed to be a battle in August of 2012. By round two, Wilder had Price largely in his sights and was calmly measuring him. Wilder knocked out Price with a right punch to the jaw that sent him tumbling backwards into the ropes. He tried to get up, but he was having trouble, so referee Ray Corona waved off the fight. Wilder won the vacant heavyweight championship of the WBC Continental Americas and successfully defended it twice.

First Tyson Fury Fight

Deontay had a perfect 40-0 record when he was scheduled to battle the British-Irish heavyweight Tyson Fury. The world was shocked when Tyson boxed and beat Wladimir Klitschko three years ago. The victory should have set up Tyson for a huge payoff in a future rematch, but instead, the boxer went on a two-year drug and drink binge that caused him to gain over 100 pounds and be deemed medically unfit to fight.

On December 1, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada, Tyson, and Deontay had their long-awaited fight. Over 325,000 people shelled out cash to watch the battle. Deontay was promised $4 million, while Tyson received $3 million. Boxing fans across were taken aback when the fight ended in a draw after 12 rounds. In the end, both Fury and Wilder earned more than $10 million.

Deontay Wilder knocked out Dominic Breazeale in the first round of their May 18 fight. Earnings for Deontay from the fight (purse and PPV) are expected to exceed $10 million. Deontay’s second victory over Luis Ortiz came on November 23, 2019. As for his compensation, he received $3 million in base salary plus $20 million for the rematch.

Second Tyson Fury Fight

In 2020, he was supposed to fight Tyson Fury again. As the fight date drew near, it was revealed that each fighter had been promised $28 million, plus a split of the pay-per-view earnings of 50 percent. On February 22, 2020, Tyson Fury and his opponent fought it out, and in the seventh round, Fury scored a technical knockout to win the title.

Wilder later revealed that he had been depressed and had considered suicide by a gun during this time. Regarding the incident, he explained “You don’t stop to consider the consequences for your daughter, your children, and so on. You can’t help but focus solely on yourself when you’re in that frame of mind. A lot of suffering, both internal and external, is running through your mind at the moment.”
