Tiafoe made his ATP Tour main draw debut in the 2014 Citi Open in Washington, D.C., after receiving a wild card from his home tournament. He was defeated by Evgeny Donskoy in his first professional tour-level competition.
Tiafoe received a wild card into the qualifying draw for the 2014 US Open, although he was defeated by eleventh seed Tatsuma Ito. He accepted a wild card into the main draw of the doubles competition partnering Michael Mmoh.
