Early Life of Fred Couples

Fred Couples was born to parents Tom and Violet in Seattle, Washington. While his mother’s family was originally from Croatia, his father’s family emigrated from Italy and changed the family name from “Coppola” to “Couples” to make it sound less ethnic.

To keep up with his elder siblings while their father worked as a groundskeeper for the Seattle Parks Department, Fred Couples developed his characteristic loose, rhythmic swing on the golf course at Jefferson Park in the neighborhood of Beacon Hill. The majority of the couples said they had never taken lessons or worked with a swing teacher, instead learning the dance moves on their own.

They met as high school students at Seattle’s O’Dea and went on to graduate together that same year (1977). He decided to attend UH in exchange for a golf scholarship. He shared a dorm at the University of Houston with future PGA Tour golfer Blaine McCallister and CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz. Couples won the 1978 Washington Open as a 19-year-old amateur at the Glendale Country Club in Bellevue, Washington, by defeating PGA Tour veteran Don Bies in a playoff.

Fred Couples’ Career

After making the transition to professional golf, Fred Couples won the 1983 Kemper Open. After winning the 1992 Masters Tournament, he won 14 more PGA Tour events. The PGA Tour named him Player of the Year in 1991 and 1992 due to his dominance on the circuit. Five newcomers were selected to join the United States Ryder Cup team, and the Vardon Trophy was also awarded. In 1992, Fred also ascended to the pinnacle of the Official World Golf Rankings.

For 16 weeks in a row, Fred Couples was the leader of the Skins Game. His prowess in this game has earned him the moniker “Mr. Skins.” He has won the tournament five times, pocketing almost $3.5 million in total. Many commentators, especially in 1989 and 1990, claimed that he lacked poise and made careless blunders, yet it is apparent that he flourished as a more mature player.

Since 1994, Couples’ career has declined dramatically. Starting around this time is when he began to experience the back pain that would follow him throughout his career as a professional golfer. However, he still demonstrated his prowess on the World Tour with a string of impressive results in his forties. While Couples’ 2007 season was marred by injuries, he bounced back in 2009 to earn seven figures in earnings. He first competed on the Champions Tour back in 2010. A handful of tournaments later, in 2016, he pulled out of the Masters’ Tournament due to back pain and subsequently retired.

In 1992, Couples launched a new chapter of his golf career by building courses. Together with Gene D. Gates, he established a design firm first known as Couples Bates Golf Design (later abbreviated to Bates Golf Design Group). More than 20 golf courses created by this firm have won international awards.
