English, a native of Valdosta, Georgia, graduated from high school in 2007 at The Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At Baylor, English won the Tennessee state championship as an individual in 2005 and led the Bears to four consecutive Tennessee state team championships from 2004–2007. As a junior in high school, English made a commitment to attend the University of Georgia in Athens, where he played golf for the Bulldogs and ultimately earned a business degree in 2011.

As an amateur in 2011, English competed in and won two Nationwide Tour events: the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA in May and the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational in July. He joined Daniel Summerhays (2007) and Russell Henley (2011) as the only other amateurs to win a Tour event. The Ohio State University Golf Club’s Scarlet Course in Columbus hosted the tournament.

English kept his PGA Tour card in 2012 by making 22 of 27 cuts, placing in the top ten three times, and earning over $1.18 million. In June 2013, at the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, he won for the first time 2013. English repeated his success from earlier in the year in the OHL Classic in Mayakoba. His final round score of 65 gave him a four-stroke victory against Brian Stuard.

With 54 holes to go in the Farmers Insurance Open in February 2015, English shared the lead with J. B. Holmes. He joined Holmes, Jason Day, and Scott Stallings in a four-man sudden-death playoff by making a birdie on the 72nd hole of the final round. On the eighth playoff hole in June 2021, English defeated Kramer Hickok and won the Travelers Championship with a birdie. This playoff lasted longer than all but one other in PGA Tour history. The 2021 Ryder Cup was held at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin, in September of that year, and English was a member of the United States team. English lost his Sunday singles match to Lee Westwood, contributing to the United States 19-9 victory.
