Ian Poulter was born on January 10, 1976, in Hitchin, England, and raised in Stevenage. He was born into a golfing family; his father, Terry, was a single-handicap golfer, and his older brother, Danny, began playing the sport at a young age. Poulter started playing with his father and brother when he was four. He eventually rose to become an assistant golf professional and shop manager at Chesfield Downs Golf Club.
However, the experience was difficult for Poulter because he was still required to pay a full green fee every time he wanted to compete at the club, which limited his competitive play at the time. He later became an Assistant Pro at the Leighton Buzzard Golf Club, where he could play more.
