On June 26, 1970, Irv Gotti was born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr in the Hollis neighborhood of Queens, New York City. His father, Irvington Domingo Lorenzo Sr., was a cab driver, and his mother, Nee Nee Lorenzo, was a housewife. He is half Filipino and half American.

Gotti decided to release his first music video for Eyes on Hip Hop in 1995, after establishing himself as a well-known DJ and performing in New York clubs. That same year, famous singer Mariah Carey approached him about directing her music video, Joy to the World.
Gotti worked as a producer on Jay-Z’s debut album, Reasonable Doubt, released in 1996. That album led to the producer working with some of the industry’s biggest names. Following Jay-Z’s suggestion, Irv adopted the stage name Irv Gotti from that point forward.
