Curtin began her comic career in 1972 as a cast member of the sketch comedy show The Second City. She arrived in New York City in 1974 and joined the improv comedy troupe The Groundlings. She made her television debut in the mid-1970s, appearing on the soap operas As the World Turns and One Life to Live, as well as the comedy Three’s Company and Kate & Allie.
Curtin appeared in the 1975 film Tunnel Vision, alongside Groundlings members Laraine Newman, Paul Reubens, and Chevy Chase. She first appeared on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live in 1977. She joined the show as a regular in the 1978-1979 season and stayed until 1980.
