A wealthy businessman, philanthropist, and politician, Jay Robert “J. B.” Pritzker (born January 19, 1965) has been the 43rd governor of Illinois since 2019. Chicago-based venture capitalist and investor Pritzker is a member of the affluent Pritzker family, which owns the global hotel chain Hyatt. He is also the founder of various companies in this field, including the Pritzker Group, where he serves as a managing partner. His wealth is believed to be $3.4 billion.

Pritzker is a steadfast member and donor to the Democratic Party. After a heated primary, he emerged as the Democratic nominee for governor of Illinois in 2018. On election day, November 6, 2018, he defeated Republican incumbent Bruce Rauner, and on January 14, 2019, he entered office. Pritzker received a BA in political science from Duke University after attending the boarding school Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. While in Chicago, he was instrumental in establishing the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center and the Illinois Venture Capital Association. Pritzker co-founded the private equity firm Pritzker Group Private Capital with his brother Tony. PECO Pallet, the industry leader in pallet rentals, and Clinical Innovations, a manufacturer of medical devices, are both parts of this expanding family of businesses. He went on to win the election by the greatest margin in a governor contest since 1994.

Mary Kathryn “M. K.” Muenster, whom Pritzker met in 1993 when she was an aide to U.S. Senator Tom Daschle, was the wife of Pritzker. She is one of Theodore and Karen Muenster’s three children. In 1990, her father made a futile bid for the Senate of the United States. The family of four resides in the affluent Gold Coast area of Chicago.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Pritzker made the property he bought next door to his unusable by removing the plumbing. The freshly constructed mansion was unusable, so Pritzker contested his initial property tax assessment and the Cook County assessor lowered the value from $6.25 million to around $1.1 million, saving him about $230,000 a year in taxes. The matter is being looked upon by federal prosecutors.
