John H.L. Hansen Biography
John H.L. Hansen is an electrical engineering (EE) professor and assistant dean for research at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science. He was born on November 17, 1959, in Plainfield, New Jersey (UTD). In addition to his position as a professor in the Department of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, he also holds the University Distinguished Chair in Telecommunications Engineering. Henrik Hansen, the wrestling champion of Denmark, is his father. His father earned a bronze medal in the welterweight division of the Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London.
Hansen earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, with honours in 1982. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, for both his master’s and doctoral studies in electrical engineering, earning both in 1983 and 1988.

Career life of John H.L. Hansen
In 1988, he began his academic career as an assistant professor at Duke University, where he co-founded the Robust Speech Processing Laboratory (RSPL) and collaborated closely with the Duke Medical Center and businesses in the nearby Research Triangle Park (RTP) area.
In 1999, he accepted positions as department chairman and professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at The University of Colorado at Boulder (CU-Boulder), as well as a combined appointment as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. From 1999 to 2003, he worked as the associate director of CU-Center Boulder’s for Speech and Language Research (CSLR), which he co-founded.
Until his appointment as associate dean for research at the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science at UTDallas in November 2012, he served as head of the Electrical Engineering Department at UTD, which he joined in 2005. He founded an interdisciplinary research centre at UTD called the Center for Robust Speech Systems (CRSS) to study speech processing, hearing sciences, and language technology.
