Josh Johnson played backup quarterback while attending the University of San Diego in 2004. On the season, he finished with 135 yards. Thereafter, he earned the starting job after Todd Mortensen departed for the 2005 season.
Johnson’s professional career began after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected him in the 2008 NFL Draft. In September 2009, he made his first appearance in a regular-season NFL game against the New York Giants. He earned his first career start on October 4 after being named quarterback on September 28.
He signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March 2012. In 2012, he joined the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. Following that, he signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns in December 2012, replacing Colt McCoy and Brandon Weeden.

On April 2, 2015, Johnson signed a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. However, he was only with the Bengals for four months, until August 2015. He then signed with the New York Jets until September 5, 2015. He later played for the Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Fleet, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Wildcats, and Denver Broncos, among others.
