Who was Kathy Whitworth?

Her extraordinary talent earned her the AP Female Athlete of the Year award in 1965 and 1967, which she shared with Wimbledon champion Billie Jean King. She was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982 for her numerous accomplishments.

Whitworth’s most impressive accomplishment was finishing first or second in 144 tournaments during her professional career. This includes an incredible streak of 23 consecutive tournament wins between 1966 and 1968, which no other player has ever done before or since. To put this achievement in context, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus only won 18 tournaments during the same time period!

Whitworth was also deeply committed to helping those around her. Throughout her career, she has donated over $3 million to charities through golf-related events. She also created scholarship funds for aspiring female golfers who wanted to pursue their dreams but lacked the financial means to do so.

Bettye Odle, Whitworth’s agent, and friend shared that Whitworth died suddenly Saturday night whilst celebrating with friends and family but did not release the cause of death.
