Kevin Gates was born Kevin Jerome Gilyard on February 5, 1986, in New Orleans, Louisiana, but grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after his family relocated there. Kevin, the oldest of three children, did not meet his biological father until he was in eighth grade.

Kevin began his professional career when he was 18 and entered his first professional studio. He discovered his love of music and drew the attention of Dead Game Records, with whom he signed a contract in 2007.
