Kotek Appoints a New Director to the Oregon Health Authority
Oregon Health Authority: New years bring new appointments to important positions, including the position of executive director of the Oregon Health Authority. James Schroeder has been sworn in as the next governor of Oregon, and he is immediately working to address some of the state’s most pressing issues.
New Director Is Appointed By Kotek To The Oregon Health Authority
On his first day as leader, Schroeder outlined the issues that are most important to him: affordable housing, affordable health coverage, and mental health care.
Schroeder began his career as a primary care physician, but he most recently served as Chief Executive Officer for Health Share of Oregon. He was appointed to his current position as Director of the Oregon Health Authority by Governor Tina Kotek.
Patrick Allen, who had been the department’s head for the previous five years before resigning on January 2 to become the state of New Mexico’s secretary of health, has been succeeded by Schroeder.
Schroeder took over as head of the agency on January 10, and he began his tenure by outlining the state’s primary shortcomings. Hospitals are overcrowded with patients suffering from respiratory viruses, and others are unable to be discharged due to the need for mental health treatment or long-term care.
Furthermore, he claimed that illegal drugs such as methamphetamine and fentanyl were to blame for the state’s deteriorating mental health as well as the deaths that were occurring there.
Schroeder also brought to light problems within the Oregon Health Plan, the state’s Medicaid insurance program. He made it clear that he is concerned about people who are denied coverage despite only minor changes to their income. As the federal government’s pandemic funding continues to dwindle, he has called on other organisations to step up to fill the void.
Under his direction, the new head of OHA established the following priorities for the organization:
Maintain coverage for those who already have it through the OHP, and work to ensure that families in vulnerable situations have other options when pandemic funds are depleted. Implement a modified version of the state’s Medicaid program. Assist communities across the state in developing mental health treatment that is tailored to the specific needs of each area.
Schroeder wants OHA to focus more on providing preventative medicine to at-risk groups, such as check-ups and immunisations, and on making these services more accessible to OHP members. He also wants OHA to lower the cost of these treatments. Eradicating health disparities, he believes, is a critical component of this commitment to preventative health.

The second goal outlined by Schroeder is the driving force behind the majority of the work that needs to be done. The state’s revised Medicaid plan is in effect until 2027 and includes a variety of provisions. Its mission is to expand the number of services available to homeless people and historically marginalised communities.
It is also intended to improve the overall quality of life for residents of the area by ensuring that people can keep their coverage despite temporary changes in their eligibility.
