Marvin Gaye Causes of Death
Marvin stepped in when his parents were fighting at their Los Angeles home on April 1, 1984. Gaye and his father got into a violent struggle as the situation deteriorated. Marvin Sr. used a rifle Gaye had given him as a gift to shoot his son in the chest and shoulder. Marvin was pronounced dead at 1:01 p.m. at California Hospital Medical Center, less than 30 minutes after the incident. Frankie Gaye, Marvin Gaye’s brother, revealed that as Marvin was dying, he said, “I got what I want… I couldn’t do it myself, so I delegated it to him… It’s fine; I finished my race and have nothing left in me.”
Gaye’s burial was attended by around 10,000 mourners on April 5th at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, and Marvin’s body was cremated; Gaye’s ex-wife Anna and his three children scattered half of his ashes near the Pacific Ocean. Marvin died without a will, thus Marvin III, then 17, became co-administrator of the estate. Gaye was in debt at the time of his death, but revenues from his music finally paid off his bills. Marvin’s father was charged with first-degree murder, but once a brain tumor was detected, the charges were lowered to voluntary manslaughter. He received a six-year suspended sentence, as well as five years of probation.
