Trump investigation of Georgia: Tuesday, the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled unanimously that former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows must testify before a Georgia special grand jury looking into interference in the 2020 election.
The state Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s decision from the end of last month that Meadows must answer a subpoena from the Fulton County investigation. In its ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court said, “We have looked over [Meadows’] arguments and found them to be clearly without merit.”
Since Meadows lives in a different state, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D), who is in charge of the investigation, had to get a South Carolina judge’s permission before she could force him to testify.
Meadows was originally supposed to appear before the special grand jury on Wednesday, but it is unclear whether that date will remain the same.
Former President Trump’s chief of staff is the latest GOP figure to fight the subpoenas from the Fulton County investigation in court and lose. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) went before the special grand jury last week. His attempt to stop the subpoena was turned down by the Supreme Court.
Willis started the investigation after Trump’s now-famous call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) in January 2021, in which he asked Raffensperger to “find” 11,780 more votes in the state.
The Fulton County district attorney has previously said that the special grand jury could finish up its work and begin handing down indictments by the end of the year.
