David Muir’s biography
David Muir was raised in the Catholic neighborhood of Onondaga Hill when his family settled there after moving to Syracuse, New York. Muir has six nieces and three nephews, as well as an older sibling and two younger step-siblings. He watched ABC News’ primetime program every night with his family when he was a kid, and he says that longtime anchor Peter Jennings was the journalistic role model he most admired. He earned his diploma from Onondaga Central Junior-Senior High School in May 1991 and his BA in journalism from nearby Ithaca College with honors in May 1995. He interned at the Syracuse television station WTVH while still in high school. A professor who told Muir he had “the cut of a TV newsman” influenced him greatly during his time at university. Career life of David Muir
Muir was an anchor and reporter for WTVH-TV in Syracuse, New York, from 1994 to 2000. Muir won first place awards from the Radio-Television News Directors Association for his coverage of the aftermath of the 1995 death of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Israel, and the Gaza Strip. Muir received two awards from the Associated Press: Best Enterprise Reporting and Best Television Interview. Muir has been named one of the “Best Local News Anchors” in Syracuse and has been honored as the host of the “Best Local Newscast” by the Syracuse Press Club.
Muir was an anchor and reporter for WCVB in Boston from 2000 to 2003, and during that time he won the regional Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting, as well as the National Headliner Award and Associated Press honors, for his coverage of the investigation into the 9/11 hijackers’ movements. Muir became the host of ABC News‘ overnight program World News Now in August 2003. He also took over as host of ABC’s World News This Morning (America This Morning). Since joining the network in February 2012, Muir has presided over weekend newscasts titled World News with David Muir. Muir and his photographer walk through chest-deep waves for blocks to find people stranded within the hospital; their reports uncover and emphasize the deteriorating conditions inside the Convention Center and Charity Hospital. In October 2006, Muir covered the Israeli battle against Hezbollah from the border between Israel and Lebanon. In March of 2007, Muir was reporting from within the Gaza Strip to cover the Hamas coup. After the greatest earthquake to hit Peru in almost 20 years occurred in October 2007, Muir was sent to the country.
