Path of Exile 2 Release Date: GGG’s Bold Move To Revolutionize ARPGs In 2024
When Path of Exile was first developed, Grinding Gear Games (GGG) was a relatively small business. Since then, the studio has grown significantly, following the game’s own trajectory in the ARPG genre and the ARPG industry. While it has been available for almost eight years, Path of Exile has gone through several stages and evolutions that have elevated it above even titanic titles like Diablo 3 in terms of longevity and success.
Path of Exile and its future were the focus of GGG’s Exilecon in 2019. When the basic game’s 4.0 expansion was announced, the attention was quickly diverted to another significant announcement: Path of Exile 2.
Yet, players will have the option of selecting which campaign to play, and that decision also comes with a variety of distinctions between the main game and Path of Exile 2. As a result, Path of Exile 2 shouldn’t truly be referred to as a sequel since it will be the same game.
Path of Exile 2 will have brand-new playable characters, each with their own Ascendancy classes, as well as brand-new Acts and a plethora of customization possibilities. Chris Wilson recently mentioned during the most recent Baeclast episode that the release date is probably going to be 2024, or slightly before that, due to the pandemic and a lack of environmental artists at GGG. The game was originally scheduled to release somewhere in 2022.

How Path of Exile 2’s 2024 Release Will Affect Path of Exile
A two-year wait is nothing to laugh at, and if GGG made this choice, it was probably not done so lightly; rather, it was the logical next step on a winding path that was made much tougher by hardships in real life. A lot of players have recently expressed dissatisfaction with GGG’s most recent releases, including the most recent Leagues and their mechanics as well as the accompanying balancing adjustments, such as all the nerfs given out in Expedition.
This has once more brought up the subject of why GGG doesn’t just stop making new Leagues and release one every four months instead, allowing for adequate testing and completion of each new expansion.
While Chris Wilson’s statement on the aforementioned Baeclast episode suggests that this is still not GGG’s objective, it is also true that the developer stuck to his promise that Path of Exile 2 would correct the flaws made in its predecessor.
This may indicate that the two-year delay is not necessarily a bad thing because Path of Exile 2 may end up being a far better game than it would be right now. The new release timeframe does, however, also provide a number of challenges for the business.
Starting with the fact that Diablo 4 might debut before Path of Exile 2 in 2024 and have a public beta in 2023, Path of Exile’s player retention and interest in the game could suffer. Speaking of which, the big 4.0 expansion for Path of Exile also appears to be far off, since 3.16 and 3.17 were mentioned during the Baeclast episode, indicating that the next big thing for GGG’s ARPG may occur in mid-to-late 2022.
As a result, it will be difficult to maintain senior players’ affection for the game. In addition, with a few Leagues emerging every three months, it will also be difficult to attract new players.
While it’s admirable that GGG will take its time to fully complete Path of Exile 2 before making it available, Path of Exile has to go through a lot of modifications in the interim in order to stay current for the foreseeable future. The release of Path of Exile 2 is scheduled for 2024.
