Biography

On August 12, 1965, in Alexandria, Minnesota, Krause entered the world. His mom and dad, Wanda Marie and Bill Popham Krause were also educators in Minnesota. He has two siblings, Amy and Michael, and grew up in Roseville, Minnesota (a suburb of St. Paul). Krause attended Alexander Ramsey High School in Roseville, Minnesota, where she participated in both track and gymnastics. After finishing high school in 1983, he first planned to study medicine at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. However, after discovering acting as a junior, he switched his final major to English Literature. He decided to pursue acting seriously after acting in several plays in college, including Paul Sills’ Story Theatre, Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9, and Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter.

Krause came to New York City after earning her bachelor’s degree in 1987, enrolled in NYU‘s Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, and earned her master’s degree in acting there in 1990. In New York, he worked as a bartender at the Palace Theatre, where he met Aaron Sorkin, who would go on to write and produce the show in which Krause would star, Sports Night. He was the lead in several productions at Tisch School of the Arts, including Macbeth, Uncle Vanya, and Arms and the Man, all of which he starred in. Krause began his career on television in the early 1990s, making guest appearances on shows including Seinfeld, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Ellen. From 1990 to 1991, he was a part of Carol & Company, Carol Burnett’s sketch comedy show. Krause had a recurring role as Cybill Shepherd’s son-in-law Kevin on the sitcom Cybill for four seasons beginning in 1996.

Krause also played the role of Casey McCall on the ABC comedy series Sports Night from 1998 to 2000. Despite widespread praise from critics, the show only lasted for two seasons before being axed for lack of viewer interest. From 2001 through 2005, Krause was the main character in the HBO drama series Six Feet Under. As a result of his depiction of funeral director Nate Fisher, he was nominated for seven awards. In the summer of 2004, Krause made her Broadway debut in a production of After the Fall by Arthur Miller. He starred as Detective Joe Miller in the Sci-Fi Channel movie The Lost Room, which aired in December 2006.

Krause co-starred with Donald Sutherland in the ABC drama series Dirty Sexy Money from 2007 to 2009. Initially, he had declined the part three times. He was also a producer for the show. He portrayed Adam Braverman in the NBC sitcom Parenthood from 2010 to 2015. Three of the show’s episodes all had him behind the camera. Krause was in the Alex Flinn–adapted fantasy picture Beastly from 2011. He co-starred with Mireille Enos for two seasons (2016–2017) on the Shonda Rhimes–created criminal thriller The Catch on ABC.

A son, Roman, was born to Krause and his ex-girlfriend Christine King in 2001. After dating for a while, Krause started dating fellow actress Lauren Graham in 2010. They started dating while playing brother and sister on Parenthood, but their first meeting was back in 1995 on the set of the sitcom Caroline in the City. It was revealed in June of 2022 that the pair had split up in 2021, after being together for 11 years.
