Richard Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on August 4, 1944. Charles and Frances, his parents, were Jewish. He would use humor to divert his physically violent mother’s attention from him and his older brother Leonard.
Belzer worked as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post after graduating from Fairfield Warde High School, which he had attended as a teenager.
Belzer attempted to further his education at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts but was ultimately expelled. He then worked in a variety of odd jobs, including census workers. Belzer’s father committed suicide in 1968.
