Since he became Chancellor in 2020, some of his most important decisions have been putting in place the furlough scheme, the Job Retention Scheme, and the Eat Out To Help Out scheme. At the G7 meeting in London in 2017, hosted by Sunak, a deal was reached on tax reform. The goal was to set up a worldwide minimum tax on multinationals and online tech companies. The OECD reached a deal to join the plan to change taxes in 2021.
In 2021, Sunak made his third budget. It included a lot of promises to spend money, most of which went to science and education. He cut taxes on gas, got rid of VAT on energy-saving devices, and cut national insurance payments for small businesses. This would be the first time since the 1940s that taxes have been this high. Sunak also gave some money to help poor people deal with rising living costs, which most powerful people thought wasn’t enough.
Personal Life
While he was a student at Stanford, Sunak met Akshata Murthy, who would become his wife. She is the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, the Indian billionaire entrepreneur who started Infosys. Krishna and Anoushka are their daughters. Sunak’s wife, Akshata, is a director at Catamaran Ventures, which is her father’s investment firm. She also runs her fashion brand, which she made herself. Sunak has been criticized because his wife has financial ties to the Russian IT company Infosys, which has stayed in Russia even though Ukraine invaded it. His wife, Akshata Murthy, doesn’t live in India, so she doesn’t have to pay taxes on the money she makes outside of India. The business has ties to Russia and to Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, who is close to the Kremlin.
