The baby-faced comic and character actor Robbie Coltrane, who played hundreds of parts during his career, including a psychologist who solves crimes on the TV series “Cracker” and the kind, half-giant Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” films, has passed away. He was 72.
Belinda Wright, Coltrane’s agent, confirmed Friday that he passed away in a hospital in his native Scotland, but she did not provide further information at the time. It was only one of many eulogies in which she praised his “forensically clever” and “brilliantly funny” nature. J.K. Rowling, the author of the “Harry Potter” series, tweeted on Friday that Robbie Coltrane was “a tremendous talent, a complete one-off.” She felt “very privileged” to have known him, worked with him and had many laughs with him.
Coltrane, originally called Anthony Robert McMillan, was born in Rutherglen, Scotland. He changed his name to honor the late jazz singer John Coltrane and began pursuing an acting career while still in his early 20s. While he had already been in several important films, such as “Mona Lisa,” “Nuns on the Run,” and Kenneth Branagh’s production of “Henry V,” his breakthrough role came in the 1990s TV series “Cracker,” for which he won the best actor at the British Academy Television Awards three consecutive years.

He went on to play Professor Snape in all eight “Harry Potter” films, among many other roles, such as a Russian crime lord in the “GoldenEye” and “The World Is Not Enough” James Bond films and Pip’s guardian Mr. Jaggers in the 2012 version of “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens. In the 2016 miniseries “National Treasure,” he played the role of a beloved TV star who may be hiding a terrible secret and got widespread acclaim for his performance.
Eric Idle, who co-starred with Coltrane in “Nuns on the Run,” tweeted on Friday that he and others had been discussing Coltrane and “wondering where he was” before Idle found out about his death. “This guy is incredibly intelligent and insightful.
