Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korean President Visits Massachusetts Statehouse on Friday

President Yoon of South Korea travels to the State House in Boston, Massachusetts. Just after noon, Gov. Maura Healey met Yoon on the steps of the famous gold-domed building in Boston.

On the final day of his state visit to the United States, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol visited the Massachusetts Statehouse before giving a speech at Harvard University.

Maura Healey, the governor of Massachusetts, met Yoon for the first time shortly after noon on the steps of the historic building in Boston that is topped with a gold dome.

A South Korean flag flapped to one side of the building as they entered the state Capital through its red-carpeted front door.

Hong Doo-Jung, 25, a public sector worker from Worcester, stood across from the Statehouse with several other people to oppose what he said was the South Korean president’s stance on unions.

Hong Doo-Jung is a member of the South Korean Democratic Labor Party. The president and Healey were walking up the stairs when Hong started shouting “strikebreaker, boo” continuously.

On Friday, April 28, 2023, in Boston, Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol walked up to the State House. Before giving a speech at Harvard University to round out his state visit to the United States, Yoon stopped at the State House.

After that, Yoon and Healey had a quiet lunch together. Later in the day, Yoon was due to speak “on the challenges to freedom and the responses to them” at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge. The topic of his talk was “the responses to them.”

After Yoon visits Washington, the next stops on his program are in Boston and Cambridge. In a speech to a joint session of Congress on Thursday, Yoon called the alliance between the United States and South Korea, which has been in place since the Korean War 70 years ago, “the linchpin safeguarding our freedom, peace, and prosperity.”
