Teen Killed in Jenin Raid

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, 19-year-old Salah al-Braiki was killed in the ensuing violence and confrontations during an Israeli army operation on Jenin. Officials in the northern city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank say that an Israeli military operation there resulted in the death of a Palestinian adolescent.

Salah al-Braiki, 19, was shot in the neck and later died at the Jenin public hospital, according to the Palestinian health ministry, which confirmed the incident to Al Jazeera on Friday.

At 1:45 am (22:45 GMT on Thursday), less than an hour after the Israeli army and special forces invaded the city of Jenin and its refugee camp, during which confrontations with unarmed teenagers and fierce armed fights with Palestinian fighters broke out, Al-Braiki was pronounced dead. The ministry also reported that at least three more Palestinians were injured by live Israeli fire.

Baraa Alawneh, the cousin of the 26-year-old fighter Ahmad Alawneh who was murdered by the army on September 28 during a big operation in Jenin, was also captured by Israeli forces.

Palestinians have been increasingly firing at Israeli military checkpoints and soldiers, especially in the northern cities of Jenin and Nablus, since last year, raising tensions in the occupied West Bank.

Since September 14, at least three Israeli soldiers have been killed in the field. One was shot and killed during a raid on Jenin, while two were shot and killed at military checkpoints last week in Nablus and occupied East Jerusalem.

Israeli forces have increased their raids, arrests, and executions in Jenin and Nablus as part of their “Breaking the Wave” operation in response to the growing organization of Palestinian armed resistance.

Since the beginning of October, at least five separate shooting incidents have occurred at the Salem checkpoint located north of Jenin, as reported by local media. About 420,000 Palestinians have had their freedom of movement restricted by Israel’s siege of Nablus and the surrounding towns, as the country looks for suspects in the shooting death of a soldier in the nearby illegal outpost of Shavei Shomron.

Due to the severe impact, the siege is having on the local economy and way of life, residents, political groups, and civil society organizations are calling for it to be lifted.

There have been 175 Palestinian deaths since the beginning of the year, 124 in the West Bank and 51 in the blockaded Gaza Strip, as reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health. In the West Bank, Jenin and the surrounding communities accounted for roughly half of the fatalities.

Millions of Palestinians in Israel’s occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem went on strike on Thursday. Government offices, businesses, and educational institutions all shut down.

According to Israeli authorities, 22-year-old Uday Tamimi opened fire on an Israeli soldier on October 8 at the main checkpoint to the Shuafat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem, resulting in the death of the soldier. This strike was direct retaliation for his death.

After 12 days of searching for him, Israeli police engaged Tamimi in a gun battle and killed him after he allegedly committed a second gunshot near the illegal Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim in the West Bank.

A security guard was reportedly treated for hand injuries, according to Israeli media. Israel established a four-day siege on the Shuafat camp and its surroundings, home to 130,000 Palestinians, in the wake of the incident, to track down the culprit. This prompted widespread protests and clashes with Israeli police across the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
