Despite the ongoing proliferation of post-credit scenes and confusing endings, some movies just don’t need sequels. As for The Greatest Showman (2017), the picture based on the true story of circus master PT Barnum was beautifully wound up with a gorgeous ribbon.

But money talks, and with The Greatest Showman having grossed a stunning $435 million at the box office, it was no surprise that a sequel was in the works, even if PT Barnum’s narrative was completed being told. We’re not making this up; the director of The Greatest Showman himself confirmed it.

He stated: “It’s only logical that a sequel will be requested for a film that becomes as popular as this one. We’re now engaged in one of those debates.”

In an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on April 26, Zac Efron threw gasoline on the fire by saying, “It’s been a long time coming.” “There are numerous projects in the works for Hugh (Jackman), including a one-man show. What will be the next step? I don’t know if there will be a sequel, but I hope so.”

Whether Hugh Jackman would return, though, is unknown. On the contrary, according to Efron, Hugh Jackman told BBC Radio 2 that “I don’t know what the real answer is, but I do know that the makers of The Greatest Showman 2 are working on a treatment.” If I’m being really honest, rumors abound, but no one knows for sure what it is… Some kind of remedy is being developed.”

Jackman made the following guess: “Even if it doesn’t focus on me, I’d like to be a part of the project. The second point is, that it did take eight years to get it done and that wasn’t all eight years of convincing people. To compose something, you need a lot of time and effort to do it.”

The Greatest Showman 2 plot: What’s it about?

No obvious ideas for a follow-up to The Greatest Showman have come to mind given the film’s three-act structure. Naturally, Barnum lived a full life, and many aspects of it could be explored in the film.

However, not all of them are suited to the style of music that fans of The Greatest Showman are likely to expect from the movie. However, his two terms as an elected official (politics x circus joke here) are unlikely to be a suitable topic for a song-and-dance routine.

In the Greatest Showman vein, political music that is both entertaining and uplifting would be a huge accomplishment for them.

Barnum also had a penchant for discrediting mediums and spiritualists. An entertaining story about him finding and dispelling hoaxes could be told.

Possibly, it will focus on Zac Efron’s (fictional) Phillip Carlyle, while keeping Hugh Jackman in a supporting role as the film moves further into fantasy. You never know what will happen in the middle of the first film, but it could be a side story about Barnum’s time running the circus.

It is unlikely that the sequel will address the issues raised by the first film’s omission of some of Barnum’s more sinister traits. Slavery was abolished, but he took advantage of people of color (and the show’s “freaks”) to make huge sums of money, even if he eventually supported the cause.

We’ll eat our top hat if The Greatest Showman 2 can win over the first film’s critics in terms of its accuracy.

The Greatest Showman 2 release date: When is it out?

The Greatest Showman 2 has yet to receive an official release date, but we can make educated guesses as to when it might arrive.

There’s no way the film will be released before March 2020, as it took about a year after production began for the previous film to be released in theatres.

That’s based on how the first film performed when it was released in December 2017 – and that’s even more impressive when you consider the fact that it was competing with Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
