The Pale Blue Eye Release Date: The Pale Blue Eye is an upcoming Netflix horror thriller set to scare us in early 2023. Scott Cooper, known for films such as Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace, wrote and directed the new film, which is co-produced by the show’s main star Christian Bale, who plays Augustus Landor. Augustus investigates a mystery at the military academy attended by future horror writer Edgar Allan Poe, played by Harry Melling.
The film is based on Louis Bayard’s 2006 novel The Pale Blue Eye(opens in new tab), in which Edgar Allan Poe, the legendary author of The Fall of the House of Usher, becomes involved in a grisly murder at America’s West Point military academy in 1830. This Gothic horror also stars Gillian Anderson, Harry Melling, and Harry Lawtey (You & Me).

What’s the Plot of The Pale Blue Eye?
The novel’s plot is followed by The Pale Blue Eye. A young cadet’s body is discovered swinging from a rope just off the parade grounds at West Point Academy in 1830. It appears to be a suicide, but something truly horrific occurs the next morning. Someone broke into the room where the body was being laid and stole the heart. With no answers and a desire to avoid any negative publicity, the Academy enlists the help of a local civilian, Augustus ‘Gus’ Landor (Christian Bale, a former New York City police detective who retired to the Hudson Highlands for health reasons.
Gus, now a restless widower, agrees to return from retirement to take on the case. As he interviews the dead man’s acquaintances, he discovers an eager assistant in a moody, intriguing young cadet who enjoys a drink or two, has written two volumes of poetry, and has a mysterious past that frequently changes from telling to telling. Edgar Allan Poe is the name of the cadet (Harry Melling).

Harry Lawtey, best known as Robert Spearing in Industry, also appears in The Pale Blue Eye. Gillian Anderson (The First Lady, The Crown, X Files, The Fall) plays socialite Julia Marquis in the drama, alongside Toby Jones as her doctor husband Daniel, and Lucy Boynton (The Ipcress File) as their daughter, Lea.

Who was Edgar Allan Poe?
Edgar Allan Poe, the legendary American horror writer, wrote poetry and short stories, particularly tales of mystery and macabre. Born in Boston in 1809, he would have been 21 when Harry Melling wrote and starred in The Pale Blue Eye. His story The Murders in the Rue Morgue(opens in new tab) (1841) pioneered the modern detective story, and his poem The Raven, written in 1845, is still one of the most well-known in American literature. Edgar Allan Poe died in mysterious circumstances in 1949, after being discovered delirious on the streets of Baltimore.
