Tua Tagovailoa Biography

American football quarterback Tuanigamanuolepola Tagovailoa currently plays for the Miami Dolphins of the NFL (NFL). He was a college football star at Alabama, where he won the Maxwell and Walter Camp awards as a sophomore and was named Offensive MVP of the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship. In spite of missing much of his junior year due to a hip injury, the Dolphins picked him fifth overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Beginning his career as a backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tagovailoa eventually took over as the starting quarterback for the Dolphins by the end of his rookie year and remained the team’s primary starter through the 2021 campaign.

Tagovailoa was the eldest of four kids born to Samoan parents Galu and Diane Tagovailoa, and he entered the world in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He was rumoured to have always had a passion for the game of football, with his parents recalling how, even as a little child, he would go to bed with a football tucked under his arm. At age eight, when most kids his age couldn’t throw a football more than 10 yards, he was consistently completing passes of over 30 yards during Pop Warner games. Many in the Samoan culture referred to him as “Chief Tagovailoa,” a title of great esteem. Seu expected Tua to develop into a professional football player and asked that he check in with him after each game to share his progress. After Seu passed away in 2014, Tua pondered retiring from the sport for a while. However, he and his father ultimately decided that he would be doing Seu justice by continuing to play. In his debut year of high school varsity football, Tagovailoa threw for 2,583 yards and 33 touchdowns with only three interceptions.

Tagovailoa claimed that his father’s use of a belt anytime Tagovailoa threw an interception was a major inspiration and incentive for his performance. Tagovailoa threw for 2,669 yards and 27 touchdowns with only 7 interceptions during the regular season in 2016, the same year he participated in the All-American Bowl. As one of the best high school quarterbacks in the country, he was also selected for the Elite 11 and was awarded the team’s most valuable player.

During the 2017 recruiting cycle, Tagovailoa was considered a four-star recruit and was regarded as Hawaii’s best high school senior prospect. He and current Atlanta Falcons quarterback and 2014 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota went to high school together in Hawaii, where Mariota served as a role model and mentor for the younger player. Before he enrolled at the University of Alabama in January 2017, he received 17 scholarship offers to play college football.

The professional life of Tua Tagovailoa

Before his season-ending injury, Tagovailoa was widely considered the top prospect for the 2020 NFL Draft. However, LSU quarterback and 2019 Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow has since surpassed Tagovailoa as the draft’s top prospect. Tagovailoa was drafted fifth overall by the Miami Dolphins despite health concerns. Tagovailoa’s selection marked the first time an NFL team has selected a left-handed quarterback since Tim Tebow in 2010. Tagovailoa opted to wear number 1 because the Dolphins had already retired his college jersey number 13, which had been worn by Dan Marino. On May 11, 2020, Tagovailoa inked a $30 million contract for four years as a rookie. He was cleared to participate in training camp in July of 2020, although he will be Ryan Fitzpatrick’s backup.

Tagovailoa entered the game in relief of Fitzpatrick in the fourth quarter of Week 6’s game against the New York Jets and completed both of his passes for nine yards. Tagovailoa was replaced by Ryan Fitzpatrick early in the fourth quarter of Week 11’s game against the Denver Broncos, a game in which he threw for 83 yards and a touchdown before the Broncos took a 20-10 lead. Tagovailoa missed the Week 12 game against the Jets after jamming his thumb in practice. In his return game, a 19-7 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 13, he threw for 296 yards and a touchdown. Tagovailoa was replaced by Fitzpatrick again in the fourth quarter despite throwing for 94 yards and a score in Week 16’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Tagoavailoa passed for a career-high 361 yards against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17, but the Dolphins lost 56-26 and missed the playoffs as a result. For the fourth year in a row, and for the 17th time in the 21 years since Dan Marino’s retirement, the Dolphins did not make the playoffs.

Personal life of Tua Tagovailoa

After making his commitment to Alabama, Tagovailoa graduated early from Saint Louis School and relocated to Alabaster, Alabama with his family. Tagovailoa’s faith is Christianity. His father, desiring a left-handed kid, spent years teaching him to throw with his left hand, even though he is naturally a righty. He’s the lone left-handed quarterback for an NFL team in 2022.

Taulia Tagovailoa, his sibling, plays quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins in college football. After spending 2019 as Tua’s backup at Alabama, he transferred to the school in 2020.
