Biography of Vicky Kaushal

His parents, Indian film action director Sham Kaushal and housewife Veena Kaushal gave birth to him on May 16th, 1988, in a Mumbai chawl. His sibling, Sunny, is an actor as well. Originating in Hoshiarpur, his family is Hindu and Punjabi. Kaushal has said that he was just a “normal child” who liked school, cricket, and movies. His dad wanted him to get a real job, so he went to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology in Mumbai and majored in electronics and telecommunications engineering. He graduated in 2009.

As he neared graduation, he went on an industrial tour to an IT company, where he realized he had no interest in working in an office and instead wanted to pursue a career in film. He worked in theatre with Manav Kaul’s Aranya group and Naseeruddin Shah‘s Motley Productions, from the backstage and announcements to stand-in roles, while studying acting at Kishore Namit Kapoor‘s academy. For the next two years, Kaushal would try out for roles in a variety of productions, but he would never find success. In 2011, he made his acting debut in a play titled Laal Pencil.

First getting his start in the film industry as Anurag Kashyap’s assistant on the criminal drama Gangs of Wasseypur, a two-part film, Kaushal has since gone on to direct several short films (2012). Kaushal has spoken highly of his time learning from and gaining wisdom from his guru Kashyap. Thereafter, he appeared in Kashyap’s films Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (2012), Bombay Velvet (2015), and the short film Geek Out in supporting parts (2013).

Career Life

In Masaan (2015), an indie drama directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Kaushal played the lead role for the first time. After Rajkummar Rao dropped out of the role, Kaushal was cast through an audition. He and Ghaywan had worked together as assistants on the Gangs of Wasseypur set. Kaushal, who plays a young man from a low socioeconomic level who dreams of a better life, spent time in Benaras, where the film is set, to study the habits of local males to perform this role convincingly. At the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, the film was shown in the Un Certain Regard section, where it went on to win two prizes, including the FIPRESCI Prize.

Masaan was hailed by critics and was held up by The New York Times as a prime example of India’s recent shift toward greater realism in film. Kaushal’s portrayal has been praised for being “poignant and memorable” by HuffPost’s Nikhil Taneja and “easily conveying both the inferiority complex and the mindset of bursting through the caste cauldron” by The Hindu’s Anuj Kumar. He was nominated for the Asian Film Award for Best Newcomer and the IIFA Award for Best Male Debut for his performance.

Before filming Masaan, Kaushal directed Zubaan, which had its world premiere at the 2015 Busan International Film Festival. His character, a sad guy who becomes stuttering after his father’s suicide, was played by him. He spent time with the doctor’s stammering patients and worked with a speech therapist to identify stammering tendencies. Kaushal had trouble breaking out of his role as the film’s stammering protagonist after production wrapped. The editor of Variety, Justin Chang, praised him as a “charismatic, instinctively compelling talent” after seeing him perform. Kaushal played a drug addict police officer in Kashyap’s 2016 psychological thriller Raman Raghav 2.0, in which Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrayed a serial killer. Kaushal’s unstable and erratic character shared little with his nature, so he had to spend five days in seclusion and keep repeating lines from the script to convince Kashyap to cast him. His health was negatively impacted by his heavy smoking and extreme dehydration. Kaushal opted for the part because he wanted to break away from the mold he’d been placed in after his first two films. The world premiere of the film took place in the Directors’ Fortnight section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Aseem Chhabra, writing for Rediff.com, praised Kaushal’s “brave” and “surprising” performance.
